NOVEMBER 2008
|
Hello & welcome to the 11th edition of “In The Groove”, The Groove Kitchen & Music Rooms monthly newsletter. Thank you to all of our new subscribers who have recently signed up. Your interest in The Groove is greatly appreciated. October was our one year anniversary and what a year it has been! Through media coverage and word of mouth from our loyal patrons we have been able to generate quite a buzz. Local media such as Snap Cambridge, Dave Fm, Cambridge Now, The Cambridge Times and most recently the KW Record’s Nightlife have all found interest in either our entertainment or our creatively fresh and tasty menu. Events such as the first annual Preston Music Festival which was sponsored by many local businesses and organized by The Groove Kitchen helped to put us on the map and highlight our commitment to the community that has supported us throughout this very exciting year.
Our continued dedication to arts and entertainment has also been recognized. The Groove Kitchen was chosen as one of three local restaurants to be a stop on
The Cambridge Studio Tour. Also we are very proud to have been voted “Best Live Music Venue” in the Cambridge Times Readers Choice Awards !
In further attempts to give back to this community The Groove Kitchen is proud to have been major sponsors for events such as Best Bites
, The Bernice Adams Awards, The Poster Boy Campaign, Dancing With The Stars, Arti-Gras, Lissard House and most recently Jammin’ for JD (Juvenile Diabetes). For each of these events we have donated a party for 40 people complete with food and entertainment. Each of these prizes was very successful in helping to raise money for these very important charities.
Our 2008 entertainment calendar was filled with exciting shows weekly from Wednesday to Saturday. The Groove Kitchen’s house band Matt Storch & The Usual Suspects (www.mattsmusicfactory.com) continue to pack the place every Friday Night. Through the help of Pete MacAulay of MacAulay’s Music (www.macmusic.ca) we were host to some great shows by Greg “Goddo” Godovitz and Dave Larue, bass player for the likes of Joe Satriani. Thank you Pete and all those who took advantage of these great events. Moving forward with our entertainment schedule The Groove Kitchen & Music Room promises to keep things electric, funky and Grooooooooooooovy baby !
Please keep spreading the word about the positive vibe and great food “In The Groove” while we continue to grow and serve up the best of what life has to offer. Friendship, food and a little Rock n Roll !
Cheers!
Matt Storch

In a long, narrow room in the heart of the Preston Towne Centre, music is alive!
From the inception of this space called The Groove Kitchen & Music Room, we have always been dedicated to the promotion of live music. There is nothing more satisfying that watching a great performance in the company of friends and good food. We are extremely proud of the fact that this community has recognized our efforts. We do this for you as much as we do it for ourselves. I have had more people approach me and say thanks for supplying them with this venue and for bringing in the level of talent that we have week after week. There are surprisingly many establishments across town offering live music but I know that none of them have put forth the effort that we have here. As the owner of The Groove Kitchen I spend countless hours browsing through submissions from bands and singer songwriters that are both local and / or on tour. The choices are never easy and the promotion of these events is even more difficult. We have literally had some of Canada’s best performers grace our stage. 2009 promises to be all that and more. As word spreads throughout the musical community I have been approached by some very exciting acts that we will be booking in the coming months. Please keep an eye on our website, The Cambridge Times, Cambridge Now, Echo Weekly and KW Records Nightlife for entertainment listings.
Thanks to both musicians and music lovers alike for making The Groove Kitchen & Music Room the “Best Live Music Venue” in Cambridge!

Lest We Forget - November 11th - Remembrance Day
The Groove Kitchen is proud to have recognized our heroes. Special thanks to staff member Susan Major for your efforts in creating a memorable window display in honor of the men & woman who fought for the freedom that we all enjoy today. As generations pass and a new generation of Canadians is raised, it is our duty to teach them to respect not only our elders but those who continue to risk their lives in hopes that Canadians can continue to live in peace.
Please take a moment to watch this video and read the following poem.

In Flander's Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flander's fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, tho poppies grow
In Flander's fields.
Liet.-Col. John McCrae

Micheal Brennan - Thursday November 13.
|
Toronto-based singer and songwriter Michael Brennan takes country music seriously — but his strong, distinct voice and his crack band put a sharp edge on the songs he writes. There’s sentiment in what he writes and sings, but hardly a trace of sentimentality.
"Toronto's best kept roots rock secret."

Don't Miss Peter Katz on Thursday, December 4th with Sean Pinchin.
|
Winner of the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award and the Grand Prize Winner of Toronto's IndieWeek, Peter Katz has been delighting listeners with his captivating blend of folk, jazz and rock music. His ethereal vocal work, profoundly honest lyrics and dynamic guitar style have earned him repeated comparisons to such greats as Jeff Buckley, Martin Sexton and Ron Sexsmith. Performing regularly to sold-out crowds in Ontario and Quebec and ever-increasing numbers across the country, Katz has been winning over fans the old-fashioned way: one at a time through great music and an intensely powerful live-show.

What's Hot in The Kitchen?
|
Chef John Wellwood continues to raise curiosity throughout the tri-cities as people from Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo, Brantford and beyond have been visiting The Groove for a taste of our exciting cuisine. Holding true to our vision of fresh, made to order dishes has not been easy in a society that loves fast food and deep fried entrees. However, as word spreads and taste buds talk we have never been busier. With the onset of winter we will be introducing our new seasonal menu
within the next couple of weeks. For those of you who visit often we hope that you will be pleased with the refreshing new menu items. For those who have not yet visited the Groove you are guaranteed to be satisfied with John’s new creations. Occasionally, we get a visit by the people whose job it is to make sure the public is getting their monies worth when dinning out. Our most recent visit came from food critic, Drew Edwards of the KW Record's Dinning Out Feature in the Nightlfe section of Thursday’s paper. Please read on to see what he had to say about The Groove Kitchen & Music Room. Reservations Recommended !

Michael Collins Photographic Exhibition
I am a photographer with a passion for live music. My first camera was a Konica Auto Reflex T SLR and at thirteen I was working weekends and summers at Mc Kittricks Cameras in London. I had no idea then, of the amazing photographic education I was getting, and the wonderful visual journey on which it would take me. The first concert I ever photographed was Joe Cocker in Heilbronn Germany, 1986. Since then, I have documented hundreds of gifted musicians live "in the moment." This exhibition shares some of my favorites.
Thank You to all the musicians, club owners, and fans. Special thanks to Doug Mc Kittrick and Matt Storch for their vision and generosity.
Every picture tells a story: Friday evenings in November Michael will be at the Groove Kitchen to answer questions and share stories. Please join us and bring your friends! Live Music with Matt Storch and the Usual Suspects
