The Groove Kitchen and Music Room - In The Groove
OCTOBER 2008

Hello and welcome to the 10th edition of “In The Groove”, The Groove Kitchen & Music Rooms monthly newsletter. September was jam packed with great events that The Groove Kitchen was right in the middle of. The Preston Music Festival was a huge success. Thank you once again to all of the performers, sponsors, volunteers and attendees. We were also involved in the Cambridge Studio Tour, Jammin’ For JD, and the “Best Bites” fundraiser for the Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Amidst this crazy schedule we were still able to pack the Groove continually with highlights such as Matt Williamson’s stand up comedy night, Keith Murch and Andy Klaehn’s jazz dinner show. Keep an eye on this months schedule as the excitement continues.

October is a special month for The Groove Kitchen & Music Room as we are celebrating our one year anniversary. Following the renovations and name change from Café On King almost a year to the day, The Groove Kitchen has evolved into a well established and popular place to enjoy a great meal, meet some new and old friends while being entertained by some of the regions finest entertainers. All of this would not be possible without our hard working staff, energetic, eager entertainers and of course supporters like you. Thank you very much for helping us create this great space !

Cheers!
Matt Storch

This Month On The Artists' Wall - Brenda Turnour

Cambridge and Dorset artist, Brenda Behan Turnour began studying art at the age of eight, in a church basement in Orillia, where she was taught by Arthur Shilling of Rama, one of Canada's premier aboriginal artists. She subsequently sold her first oil painting at age twelve. Through her teen and early adult years, Brenda designed student council and Cancer Society posters, cards, party invitations, etc. but discovered that she preferred to paint/draw when the mood came upon her, rather than according to demand.

Brenda holds degrees from the University of Toronto and University of Caen, France where she won her first major art competition with pen and ink sketch of a 'manoir'.

In 1993, watercolours beckoned and since this time, Brenda has been painting, teaching and entering juried shows on a full-time basis.

In 2003, Brenda was nominated for the K-W Regional Artist of the Year; in the spring of 2004, she was awarded the "Bernice Adams Award" as Cambridge's Artist of the Year and in September, 2004, won an "Honourable Mention" Award at the COAA Annual Juried Show in Etobicoke.

"Any talent that I have is a gift from God and my inspiration is received from the joys and beauty of life, which constantly surprise and surround me."
